Newark, whose modern boundaries were first drafted in 1875 by the Perrin brothers, established a dairy and laid out the town. Despite jokes from local ranchers about the boggy site chosen for the town, the brothers eventually attracted the Pacific Land Investment, Company.
Settlers interested in farmland, moved to the area and grew wheat, potatoes and onions. In 1878, trains, a hotel and the first ferry boat were bringing travelers to the town.
Newark has grown and the industry is slowly moving toward computers and the city expects more jobs to open up as Silicon Valley firms move to Newark.
In 1877 with the Carter Brothers railroad shops was set up and Wedgewood stoves were built in Newark for more than 30 years beginning in 1910. The city is home to one of the major shopping malls in Alameda County, Newpark Mall.
